When setting up a new git repository in GitHub for a C# dotnet project, there doesn’t seem to be a preset .gitignore template for C# or dotnet. There actually is, but unhelpfully it’s not called what you’d expect; C#, CSharp, .net or dotnet… it’s instead name “VisualStudio” 🙄

There’s actually a few ways of getting a good dotnet .gitignore into your repo, three of which are listed below:

They all seem to be different versions/generations of the same file (I suspect the GitHub VisualStudio Template and dotnet’s new gitignore are previous versions of the gitignore from GitHub’s gitignore repository, just tied to the current release of GitHub/dotnet).

GitHub’s Visual Studio Template

The first (an probably easiest) way to get a .gitignore file for dotnet is to just use the VisualStudio template when creating your new repo in GitHub… providing you can remember it’s named VisualStudio and not CSharp or dotnet.

VisualStudio .gitignore

For reference, here’s what GitHub’s template contains:

## Ignore Visual Studio temporary files, build results, and
## files generated by popular Visual Studio add-ons.

dotnet new gitignore

Another way is to use dotnet’s command line interface (CLI). As long as you’ve got a recent (.net Core 3 or later) version of dotnet installed, you can run the following to generate a .gitignore for you:

dotnet new gitignore

This produces a file very similar to the github template, but at the time of writing had a few differences. As mentioned earlier, I suspect this is just a different version of the same file.

GitHub’s own gitignore Repository

A third (and possibly ultimate) way of getting a .gitignore file for your shiny new repository is to go to the source. You’ll notice at the top of both of the previous .gitignore files, there’s reference to this: https://github.com/github/gitignore/blob/master/VisualStudio.gitignore

This file is different again, but since both previous versions reference this file, I suspect this is the most up-to-date.

So there’s three ways of getting a .gitignore file for your new dotnet git repository! It doesn’t really matter which you use - all three are good starting points, and you can chop and change the file to your hearts content going forward.
